Ironing Out The School Year

Now that the school year is back in swing, most kids and their families are acclimating to the increase in scheduling demands, homework and expectations.

Around this time of year, I start to get calls from parents reporting increase in arguments, anxiety and difficulty sleeping.  It is important to acknowledge the level of change that goes on from transitioning from a low demand summer routine to a high demand school routine.

To help avoid this, try to keep things consistent in your home routine. As much as possible, try to have a clear homework routine, closer to when your children get home from school and farther away from bed time. If the routine stays consistent, your children know what to expect when they get home, this will help eliminate homework arguments.

Aim for an early bedtime. I have blogged about the importance of sleep for a healthy brain before, and this continues. If your child is sleep deprived, their focus, behavior and affect will all change.  Look to have screens off an hour before bed, and for school age children 10-11 hours of sleep is necessary.

The school year will bring new challenges for your child. Make sure they are well rested and well prepared for these endeavors. Set the routine and expectations early in the year to avoid difficulties later on.
